How an animator approaches the creation of and object/effect relationship can be really interesting. The examples I am including here are from recent postings by SIGGRAPH, an organization that has been at the heart of computer graphics since long before most people knew there was such a thing. And yes, many of them are professionals, including all three of the artists in this group.

The folks at APOD have done it again, with yet another amazing picture. This time Göran Strand did a mosaic image of the full moon over a snowfield, with the lights of Östersund, Sweden peeking over the horizon in all directions. Check out his other images at his site, he creates some truly astounding graphics.

BBC Radio 4 starts a new radio play with Terry Pratchett’s Eric tomorrow. They have broken the story into four parts, with part one airing at 2300 GMT on Wednesday, March 6th. If you want to get an idea of what you can expect, listen to the clip and try not to hurt yourself laughing. Terry Pratchett’s stories are always funny as hell, and BBC Radio does a first class job of rendering them in Radio Play format. And if you haven’t grabbed the Discworld App for the iPad yet, here is a little teaser for you…

In movies, Wreck-It Ralph was one of my favorite recent animations, well worth watching again and again. Meanwhile, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 brings what is hopefully the conclusion of this series to the small screen.

In TV the Australian Mermaid fantasy series H2O Just Add Water is having all three seasons being released in the US. Likewise the Canadian Steampunk series Murdoch Mysteries is coming out with season 5, and also putting seasons 1 through 4 into a box set.

In Anime, Rurouni Kenshin: New Kyoto Arc is a feature length OVA alternate history ninja vs. warlord story. Bodacious Space Pirates: Collection 2 brings the second half of the series about a high school girl who inherits a spaceship full of pirates from her father. Finally, Natsume’s Book of Friends rolls out season 3 in a premium edition. It seems Natsume was shunned for his ability to see yokai (spirits and/or monsters), and spent the first two seasons resolving things with the spirit world, in the process of which he gained a family and made friends. Now the spirit world is coming back for him with new problems to be solved.

Глюк’oZa is a band that knows how to blend excellent animation with quality music, and they have built a sci-fi storyline much as Gorillaz have. The name of the band is also the stage name of the lead singer/songwriter/dancer/actress, Gluk’oza’s real name being Natalia Ilinichna Ionova. The stage name means Glucose, or Sugar in Russian, and I pretty much like all her music. These are just a few of her videos, you can see lots more on her web site, and I will no doubt post more of them here another time.
