There is only one real option this week: Skyfall is finally hitting the big screen! Like everyone else, I have been waiting for this one. I got bored with Bond after Sean Connery left the role, but Daniel Craig brought the character and the franchise back to life for me.
We have several decent films to choose between this week, and silly person that I am I find myself leaning towards Wreck-It Ralph. This animation is about an arcade game villain who decides to be a hero instead, and all the chaos and destruction he creates in the process. But then again Vamps, a romantic comedy about a couple of female vampires in NYC, has an amazing cast and looks quite good as well. If I feel more action oriented when the weekend rolls around, The Man with the Iron Fists tells the tale of a bunch of bad guys who descend on a village in feudal China looking for gold, and the humble blacksmith who fights to defend his friends and family. No, it should not be hard to find at your local theater, considering Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu, and Eli Roth are all involved… and Quentin Tarantino got into the mix somehow as well.
Here is a movie I am seriously looking forward to. This franchise just keeps getting better with every film, and not just Iron Man; all the Avengers.
Without a doubt the movie that must not be missed this week is Cloud Atlas, an amazing story about the interconnectedness of all things, including first and foremost the human heart. I haven’t read the book yet, but it is on my to-be-read pile, and I will be starting it right after I see the movie.
Steampunk Japan style comes to US screens this Friday when Tai Chi Zero finally gets released here. The basic plot is Kung Fu vs. the evil railroad barons, and as you can see from the trailer it should be quite entertaining. Of course, it may be a bit of a challenge to find a place showing it if you do not live in or near a major city this being a foreign film and all, but I suspect it will be worth it.
Before Dorothy headed to Oz, many others proceeded her. One of them was a circus magician later referred to as The Wizard, and coming up next year Disney is going to be telling his story, in Oz The Great And Powerful. L. Frank Baum wrote a lot of Oz books, and while this wasn’t one of them I am really looking forward to the film. It should be hitting the big screen in March of next year.
