If you are not already watching the made-for-BBC America series Orphan Black, you need to correct that right away! One of the twistiest new shows on TV, they uplevel their game with every episode. And it is easy to find yourself there; they are part of the BBC America Supernatural Saturday lineup, airing immediately after Doctor Who and just before The Nerdist. So odds are good you have been watching all along, since it is just easier to leave your TV on the same channel. But if you haven’t been, most carriers who provide BBC America have a Video On Demand service for your set top boxes through the remote, or an online streaming service like Comcast’s Xfinity (tablet/smartphone app or web page for your computer) where you can start with the first episode and work your way through the entire series. If you don’t have a cable/satellite system that supplies VOD oriented services as part of a Value Added package (it lets you watch more channels and programs more ways for no additional money just to make staying their customer more valuable to you), you can buy the episodes from places like iTunes and Amazon Instant Video. This one is really good, you should at least watch the first episode and get a feel for the show.
A new show this season, Random Hero seems to be somewhere between The Greatest American Hero and Sarah Jane Smith. The first episode sets the tone nicely and seems to promise some fun stories coming up…
As the 50th anniversary continues, the BBC are just about to launch a new special… The 4th Doctor. Tom Baker is featured for this round, with a series of quotes. The quote out of that set I particularly like:
The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don’t alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their views. Which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.
I suspect the Tom Baker special will be available soon, and I can’t wait to watch it. Everything they have put out for the 50th year celebration so far has been a real treat, I can’t wait for what comes next!
Crunchyroll has started playing the spring anime season shows, and it is off to a great start; you can see the lineup here. I thought I should mention a few of the ones that look promising to me in case you might want to check them out.
Attack On Titan is a tale of humanity trapped within a walled city by giants who seek to eat them. The Scouting Legion are the only ones brave enough to explore beyond the walls, and mostly they just die… a lot. Eren may be the one to pull humanity through the walls into the future.
HENNEKO – The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat is about two people who went to beg a favor from a god, only to have their wish granted by having a part of their mind removed. Now they each act in ways they never expected, and are trying to find their ways back to being themselves, complete with the lost bits.
DEVIL SURVIVOR 2 is fairly Gantz-like; thirteen people die, and are given the choice to live, enlisted into the front line with the war with demonic forces attacking their family and friends. Only the summoning spells are built into cell phone apps, and a secret government agency has a completely different set of such apps. It looks to be quite the winner so far.
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet brings a taste of Earth with a serious twist, and may be the most interesting series of all. Our protagonist starts out in combat protecting the survivors of humanity from alien attackers while looking for a new planet to live on. He then gets spat out the side of a collapsing wormhole to a random segment of space/time, where things get really strange. This is me urging you to watch the first episode, beginning to end, and see if you don’t like it too. I suspect this one may end up being my favorite series of the new season, it has everything from the paratemporal to the transdimensional, and with a double helping of attitude just for spice!
There are more I haven’t checked out yet, I will post again if I find any more good ones.
Nozomi Entertainment has a channel full of their own Anime for you to stream and enjoy, as does Right Stuff (even though the latter is all silly). This is yet another streaming source that gives you entire episodes of anime programs, although in this case they save the cost of installing, configuring, and running their own video servers by using the YouTube service as their delivery platform. I like the concept, and appreciate it means they get to supply us with yet more free to watch anime from an amazing range of classic productions. I end up buying the majority of my Anime DVDs from Right Stuf, simply because their prices tend to beat everybody else’s by a noticeable percentage. And as with the other suppliers, being able to watch the shows for free definitely helps me remember why they need to be part of my permanent collection.
I have never had a Viz Media paid subscription, so I know nothing about their paid services, it’s quality, etc. But they do put a bunch of stuff on streaming for free, and they have some kick ass programs, including One Piece, Naruto, and Tiger and Bunny, to name a few. Like most everybody else they stream to a number of platforms, which seems to have a bit of emphasis to the X-Box in their case. Like Funimation, they are a distribution house, which means they only carry licensed programs that they can also sell you on a disc. But they have a large enough library of product that they keep constantly updating that you will probably be pleased with the selection.
