Shin Gojira AKA Godzilla Resurgence is in theaters as of tomorrow, and runs for one week. On Friday Max Steel is the combination of human Max McGrath and alien Steel, who become the superhero when they have to. This is a spinoff of a TV series based on an action figure, so it is somewhat Transformers-like in its genesis. Considering it was filmed in the Carolina’s and the toy company producing the movie is Mattel, I am not sure why the only official web site I could find for it is in Japan.
The re-imaging of Ghostbusters becomes available this week, starring four very gifted and funny women. Approaching the Unknown is a story about the first mission to Mars, which in this version has a single expedition member. The most recent iteration of The Legend of Tarzan was a solid example of the franchise, but it just didn’t speak to me the way some of the work done in the 40s and 50s did. We also get an animation this time around, Ice Age: Collision Course being every bit as funny as the previous four entries in that series. I loved the visual of the proto-squirrel being carried away in an alien’s flying saucer that was the heart of every trailer I saw.
In Anime, Wish Upon the Pleiades: Complete Collection puts a bunch of magical girls in a spacecraft and sends them into the skies to retrieve pieces of a destroyed alien ship. And Level E: Complete Series is coming out in a S.A.V.E. edition, for those who haven’t picked it up yet.
RWBY Volume 4 premieres October 22nd, with the reconstituted Team Ruby up to their necks in monster mayhem and the original team members scattered across the land. Volume 3 ended in a serious cliffhanger, with a lot of mental, physical, and emotional trauma, and unresolved plot threads out the wazoo. It seems like I have been waiting forever for the next season to get here, I can’t wait to see how they resolve it. The production company is Rooster Teeth, who’s previous titles include Red vs. Blue, and the animation software they are working in is Poser.
I loved the UK version of Dirk Gently back in 2012, and now it looks like we have another winning version. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency comes to BBC America beginning Saturday the 22nd of this month, and it looks hysterical. The cast includes Elijah Wood, who brings the quirkiness to his character that a show based on a Douglas Adams book needs. In case you were not already aware, here are a few trailers to give you the general idea.
The announcement is even more exciting than the trailer; the theatrical release of Sword Art Online The Movie -Ordinal Scale- on February 18, 2017, is no longer exclusive to Japan. It will simultaneously be released in a thousand theaters world wide, including here in the US. Based on a brand new story by Reki Kawahara, the creator of this series, I am ready to see this one on the big screen!
Shin Gojira AKA Godzilla Resurgence has a limited run from October 11th to the 18th across the country, with most places having a theater within an hours drive. I mention it today because at least one theater is getting it on Friday the 7th, apparently. The other reason to mention it now is I didn’t find any other interesting movies for this weekend.
