It seems there is an App that lets you put words in William Shatner’s mouth, and then play them back. Shatoetry is available now for iDevices, and is being ported over to Android soon. Bill recorded a large vocabulary of words (although apparently it can be challenging to create normal sentences with them) suitable for wacky poetry or bizarre statements, and it is up to you to assemble them and share them with your friends. I normally only mention free apps here, but this one seems like enough fun to be worth the three dollar investment.
This one is for the iOS series of devices, including iPhones and iPads; the Free Graphing Calculator for iOS. This has a lot of built in functions, solvers for a variety of equation types, constants including those necessary to do orbital mechanics calculations, reference material including some very detailed but understandable explanations of how the various logic gates work, and a whole lot more. If you do anything with math beyond count your change at the checkout counter, this app will help you do it a lot faster and easier. Thanks to the folks at The Daily App for the heads up on this one. If you have a iOS or Android smart device you will want to visit the Daily App once a week or so to check out all the interesting goodies they find.
The folks over at NeuroSky have come up with a brainwave detecting headset about the size and shape of a pair of headphones, which plugs into your Android or iOS device. Right now it works with around a hundred Apps for some hands free control, and not all of them are games. It is a bit pricy, but at $130 it is hands down the cheapest and most portable EEG mapper you can buy. Thanks to the folks at Gear Patrol for the heads up on this one.
The TV show Misfits has run for two seasons in the UK with the third under way now, but hasn’t appeared on traditional TV over here yet. You can buy it from iTunes or watch it on Hulu Plus, however, and now you can download and play the Misfits Community Service Game App for free. They have versions available for both the iDevices and the Android OS, you can use the links on their page or search the appropriate marketplace directly. In the game, you are on the community service team performing tasks and are looking to make money and win popularity points. If you play well enough, you will be invited to cash them in for a new superpower and a fresh mission. At the whopping cost of free, I recommend any fan of the show tries this one out.
The folks over at SFX got together with the team from Spoken Word Audio and created a Sci-Fi Quiz App that runs on various iDevices. And unlike many of the BBC offerings, this one is available for us in the US as well. If you think you have what it takes to beat the quiz and you are in America, you can grab it here; if you are in the UK, use this link instead.
Last time I mentioned NASA’s Swiss Army Knife first App, the NASA App. This time, a few quick links to the modules they broke off from that monster and turned into stand alone quick loading tools. First off is the NASA TV streaming App, for watching in realtime, and comes in both an iPhone and HD iPad version. Then from JPL comes Space Images, with a monster collection of pictures that come in iPhone, iPad, and Android flavors. There doesn’t seem to be an equivalent stand alone App for Twitter like there is in the NASA App, but there is a NASA Tweetup page that allows you to sync your mobile tweet interface of choice with other like minded space cases heading for a specific real world event. That gives you some of the functionality of the first App, but there are also some new Apps that do entirely different things: more on them next time.
