At least the finest Steampunk TV I have seen so far. The new show Warehouse 13 has some quality Steampunk props, including a 2-way TV communicator built by Phylo T Farnsworth, a ray gun assembled by Nikola Tesla, and a computer keyboard that had to at least be inspired by Jake’s Steampunk Workshop, if he hasn’t been hired to build the props for this show. Watch it now, along with a Tesla short…
You have to love the section of the TOR website called Of Interest, and here are a few recent examples why. The Web Urbanist has put together one of the best collections of Science Fiction Weapons assembled on a single web page. While mostly blasters, it includes one or two other types of offensive toys (not much for defense, here). Something Awful had its usual collection of Forum entries that allowed them to put together this excellent collection of Star Wars Classic Art. That may not mean exactly what you think it does, so be sure to take a peek. And from Geek Tout came the link for Silence of the Lego Lambs, the Musical (WARNING: not work friendly)…
It is Worldwide Dungeons and Dragons Gameday today, and lots of people are playing. But here is a prototype of a toy I would like to start playing with. It is built with off-the-shelf parts totaling about $350; a camera, a small projector, a cell phone, and some colored plastic or tape for your fingers. But it combines them for functionality we have never had before, and in production it would cost around $100. They are calling it the Sixth Sense, and it is the first wearable computer I have seen that turns your environment and the things in it interactive. This project is from the MIT Media Lab, one of many they are developing to invent a better future. Thanks to Technology Story for the heads-up on that one.
Instructables has a good how-to for building a Tardis model from cerial boxes and other found objects. For the less physically inclined, the Second Life metaverse has all the Alliance Sims (like Info Island) setting up a Sci-Fi theme for March. If you want to help create it, contact any Alliance Sims group, like Sci Fi & Fantasy Portal, and volunteer your virtual time and skills.
