Once more it is International Talk Like A Pirate Day, and I spotted no fewer than 5 people in pirate garb at various points in my wanderings today. I was not dressed for the occasion myself, but I did remember to start every conversation with Arrrggghhh. I am not sure that went over real well on a couple of the conference bridges at work, but too bad.
If you were there, you know there is no way to make anyone who wasn’t understand the experience. This is the set that closed the show, on Monday morning, August 18th, at 8AM. Of course, it was supposed to happen on Sunday night, but the entire event was running on hippy time, and by the time it became Hendrix’s turn, that rather elastic time frame had stretched more than a bit. The video quality is poor, and the portable audio recording technology of the time was never more than half as good as hearing a live song recorded in a studio, either of which couldn’t hold a candle to what you actually heard in person. But I just find it amazing that I can actually hear this again, let alone see it, and had to share it. They took the video down that I had embedded here, so removed the embed command string. I am guessing they only had it posted through the anniversary of the actual event.

Just a reminder the second annual The Future Is Here Festival at the Smithsonian takes place this weekend (Friday through Sunday). Some of the speakers include Adam Steltzner, George Takei, Kim Stanley Robinson, David Brin, and The Mythbusters. At the higher ticket levels the event also includes priority seating on Saturday night for the national premiere of X-Men: Days of Future Past at the National Museum of American History, and Patrick Stewart will be taking questions from the audience afterwards.
Sadly not with a robot backup band, and I am sorry to report there are no North American dates as yet, but Babymetal is setting up its first World Tour. The announced stops include Paris, Cologne, London, and Chiba City, and they are currently negotiating more concerts, so we could still get to see them here. PCMag dropped in on the House of Imagination exhibit at the Tribeca Film Festival and put together this report. This is the second year the festival did the exhibit and competition, which they call Storyscapes; it is all about how movies may evolve and become more interactive and more immersive. There were 5 finalists, and they put forward some amazing installations. I am sure it is no surprise to anyone that Oculus Rift is at the center of a lot of these development approaches.
