We are only abut 3 episodes in to Kamisama Dolls, which you can watch online on Crunchyroll either an hour or a week after it airs in Tokyo, depending on your account type (the free accounts wait a week, the paid an hour). The opening song is sung by Chiaki Ishikawa, and her record label Flying Dog has released the full length song for streaming on their YouTube channel, so I am posting it here. God Dolls (yes, Kamisama means “God”) battle at the behest of their Noble Shrine Doll User, some of which have more of a clue than others. The animation is a bit old school, but not that old; maybe 8 to 12 years ago stylistically. A few of the characters I care about and the plot has been interesting so far, so I will be watching this one for at least a few more episodes.
Tomorrow, on July 22nd,the Cartoon Network will be presenting their Lego Star Wars TV Special, and it should be a lot of fun. Thanks to SFX for the heads up on this one. Called Lego Star Wars: The Padawan Menace, it has characters from every incarnation of Star Wars built so far, is written by the folks who do The Simpsons, and animated b the team who created Happy Feet. Nice to know that the franchise continues to evolve and perhaps even be a bit silly on occasion.
For 29 years I worked for Zambelli Bros. every 4th of July, my team and I putting on the best fireworks displays we could do for the budgeted explosives/insurance allotment for each town on the east coast we were assigned to entertain. And I will admit that hand loading the mortars and running around with a road flair to set them off was quite exciting, even if they did require computer controlled ignition if you exceeded a given shell size or for certain environments. And I am very proud of my crews safety record; at no point on any display was any member of the audience injured, and all of those of us on the shoot crew retain all of our limbs, eyeballs, etc. There may have been a few non-human damages inflicted, like the loss of the foliage on the 4th hole green at the Congressional Country Club golf course (they TOLD us it was OK to set up the finale racks there, but apparently they didn’t realize that things that exploded to launch themselves into the air would shower down some expended but still burning detritus), or the loss of some trees at the Antietam display in Sharpsburg the year the rain got to the launch charges (the wet launch charges threw them 100 ft. in the air, so the 400 foot blast radius for the larger shells made life a bit more exciting than we were expecting. But we moved all the cars out from under the trees before any of the gas tanks exploded, and it was fun watching the fire departments guy’s eyes bug out while he shouted “Is it SUPPOSED to do that??”).
I want to thank National Geographic for helping me relive that experience by putting together their excellent Naked Science episode, The Secret World of Fireworks. I came in part way through the first airing of the program on Thursday night, and will be re-watching it every time it airs this weekend; I encourage you to do the same. I especially liked that they devoted a noticeable segment of it to a display at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, where I did my very last show in July of 2007. Happy 4th of July!
Hell Girl has been streaming for a while, but now Anime Network has added Maria Holic to the online streaming collection. The Anime Network YouTube site starts out with a very nice Angel Beats trailer, which should be online sometime soon (actually already online if you get your feed from the Anime Network paid service). All of which means you have a good site to watch some quality Anime from, whenever you are so inclined. Enjoy!
According to SFX, this is the first 3 minutes of the first episode of season 4 of True Blood. If Tinkerbell held orgies, they might look a bit like this at the front entrance. Notice the familiar face in the last minute of the footage who will be playing her dead grandfather this season, and the timescales of fairyland compared to mortal realms implied by their conversation.
Outcasts is coming to BBC America on Saturday, June 18th, and they just turned loose a new trailer for it. Now if they would only pick up Misfits.
