I was rather surprised to find there isn’t much new coming out this week for last minute x-mas gifting, but there is one masterpiece: Futurama: Volume 6. I have always loved this show, and it continues to be high quality sci-fi humor.

Another show worth looking into is Rosario + Vampire: Season One, and Rosario + Vampire: Capu2, which means you can collect the entire series up at the same time. The basic plot is a normal human kid gets accidentally enrolled in a high school for monsters, and ends up with a vampire girlfriend. Plenty of comedy and fan service in this one, as there is in the other new anime for the week: Heaven’s Lost Property – Season 1 Complete. In that one a girl crazy high school boy has a wish granting winged girl fall out of the sky and into his life. She interprets his wishes in some bizarre ways not being used to humans, with pretty comedic results.

Strangely enough, I found no live action releases this week; I think that is the first time that has ever happened.

Dave TV has announced that it has signed off on producing season 10 of Red Dwarf, which in fact the Red Dwarf web site has also posted. This is not the total shock and surprise that it could be since Craig Charles (Dave Lister) sort of leaked the information a few months ago at a con. Here is the video Dave is running as evidence that this really is happening.

Staring us off this week is Rise of the Planet of the Apes, where we learned that we didn’t blow the Earth up after all, but did ourselves in through genetic engineering. Also out is Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame, a Sherlock Holmes style action/adventure period piece filled with well known Asian film stars.

I there were any live action genre TV shows coming out this week, I was unable to find them. There is, however, a documentary that might be of interest; PBS’s Steve Jobs: One Last Thing.

For western animation, Kung Fu Panda 2 from Dreamworks continues the saga of Po, with world class animation and a great story. There is of course an expanded pack with a second DVD with new shorts and extras, as well as the Kung Fu Panda Collection, which has both the first and second movie in it.

Bleach Box Set 11 brings episodes 168 through 179 of the Soul Reapers epic series of battles home. Also available is Kekkaishi Set 3, which has the Barrier Masters fighting monsters for an additional 13 episodes. If you are wondering if either of these series are for you, you can watch episodes online at those links to find out. Odds are good you will not be able to watch Urotsukidoji New Saga Complete online; while it is a fantasy adventure about battling gods, it is also hentai, and as such for adults only.

There are a few re-releases into lower cost packaging today. Kino’s Journey – Complete Collection and Ikki Tousen – The Complete Series [S.A.V.E.] can now be acquired for $20 or less if you shop around.

Yes, it is true. BBC America will be hosting a special TV presentation of NPR favorite Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me on Friday, December 23rd. Neil Gaiman will be playing their quiz game Not My Job, while Paula Poundstone, Alonzo Bodden and Phill Jupitus will be on the panel looking back at the years top stories from both a British and American perspective. The program will also be broadcast on NPR that weekend, so those of you reading this on the radio will not be left out. Had I been able to find a trailer, it would have been posted here.
