Doctor Who Theme with Music

I generally do a music post on Saturday night, and tonight being the 50th anniversary of the very first Doctor Who episode, that pretty much locks down the theme. A number of fans have done their own version of Doctor Who Theme, and I thought I would share a few of the ones I really liked today. The first one is by Camille and Kennerly Kitt, also known as the Harp Twins, and they have done a truly unique version. The next is Doctor Who Meets Metal from Eric Calderone. Then we have Lara plays the Doctor Who theme on violin, and I would like to point out the posters behind her and her R2D2 skirt.

Finally, we finish up with the famous Doctor Who Theme Song played with Tesla Coils by Ark Attack! If you haven’t already played with the musical possibilities inherent in Tesla Coils, it is really pretty simple. They are spark gaps (sometimes some pretty freaking big spark gaps) through the air generated by Alternating Current. How frequently they spark per second determines the frequency of the sound they make, which allows you to use them to play music. It works best with a standard synthesizer keyboard structure, where the key you press engages the preset oscillator circuit that feeds power to the coil at the desired frequency.

This is your Traditional Irish music, played by a band composed of Japanese Death Metal musicians with a Zydeco drummer. If they actually lived in the UK, they would have had a flat next door to the Pogues. That is the shortest way I could get across the idea of what their music is like, but you won’t really know until you listen to them yourself. And maybe not even then. The first track is Drunken Pirates, the second is Polka/Ill Weeds Grow Apace, and we finish with Rascal Trail.

Escape Pod Archives

I love Radio Plays and Audio Books, and wanted to mention these for anyone who does not already know of them. Escape Pod is a podcast that delivers a weekly free Sci-Fi audio story, and has been doing so since 2005. It is so successful at it that it is listed as a qualifying professional sale at the SFWA. In addition it has generated two spinoffs, Pseudopod for Horror fiction, and PodCastle for Fantasy fiction. You can subscribe to their podcasts, download the MP3 files from their sites, or got to the Escape Pod Archives searchable collection at Wikipedia.

More Chameleon Circuit

I have posted tunes from Chameleon Circuit here before, and now I am doing it again. They got to record this one actually on the TARDIS set, as part pf the 50th anniversary celebration. I say they, it is mostly Alex Day and friends. It looked like so much fun I had to not only add it here, but also include a making-of video, and a string of other tracks from them. Yes, it is all about Doctor Who. Yes, it is all a bit strange. And, yes, it is all fun fan music!

More J-Alt Rock

The song is from Simple Plan, the song Summer Paradise, featuring the vocal work of Taka from One OK Rock, one of the best Alt Rock bands from Japan. This is one of the more interesting songs since The Lazy Song sung by Bruno Mars and featuring Leonard Nimoy in the video. Come to think of it, it sounds a lot like Summer Paradise. And then, just because I can, a recent track from Rip Slyme, who’s music I can only describe as Punk/Rap/Lounge, however that actually works.
