Orbit the Tardis!

This Kickstart project will do exactly that: Put a Tardis in Orbit! It is on a par with an AM-SAT or OSCAR launch in that it is an amateur satellite launch, except without the radio relay functions. It does include a computer to operate the passive positioning system that will allow the camera to take pictures of Earth, and a low power transmitter to send those images back to earth. I like the project, and I like that attitude of the father/daughter team who put it together, so I have to contribute to this one. Check out the video to see what I mean about attitude.

101 pictures of C’Thulhu? Yep, not the band, but images from the books written by the guy they named themselves after, have been collected up over at The Lovecratfs Man. I have played with the big green guy a bit myself (OK, sometimes he’s red), here is an image and an animation I put together…

Carrot Crazy

This is the Senior Thesis film produced at Ringling College of Art and Design by Dylan Vanwormer and Logan Scelina. Yes, it is a bit silly, but where animation is concerned that is often the point. These kind of things inspire me to plug away at my own animation projects, even though mine never seem to look this good.

Saturday the 14th

A Vimeo Staff Pick, this animation about what horror movie serial killers do on their day of is a hoot. Built by Kristjan Lyngmo with a bit of attitude and style, it will hopefully inspire budding animators to give their own pet projects a shot. Thanks to io9 and a dozen others (but they got there first) for the heads up on this one.

Pictures of London

A picture I took in London, and then processed a bit. This was a photo of Winchester Cathedral, processed as a watercolor/sketch combination. I obviously need to play with the processing some more to get the setting’s just right to create the image I have in my head, but this isn’t a bad start, all things considered. And it does have the advantage of being something I created and therefore own the rights to, so I can use it in other projects as I see fit. I am going to play with some others to see what I can come up with, and share some of them here.

Graphic Resources: LayerPaint

If you are a digital artist or are just looking for some tutorials, check out Layer Paint, a new site full of resources to help out. This site really did just launch, so they are just beginning to compile their gallery and get their tutorials going. I found a free brush set there that was perfect for a project I am working on as an example, and while the brush set format is for Photoshop, all my other graphics packages like Gimp or Paint Shop Pro use them as well. This is a 2D resource site put together by the great folks at 3D Total to expand their online artistic footprint. The terms of service include an entry to prohibit the use of add blockers on their sites, but even when you give them an exception you generally only find a single ad per page down at the bottom. Since it is always for a 2D or 3D graphic software package or plugin I have been drooling over anyways, I am not offended even though my wallet is at risk.
