In movies Transformers: Age of Extinction is for the serious action junky, as any one who has seen the previous films in this franchise can attest. For myself, my must-have entry in this category is Space Station 76; anything that gets proclaimed the best science fiction comedy since Galaxy Quest has to be a keeper.

Our only genre entry in TV is Beware the Batman: Dark Justice – Season 1 Part 2, another animated adventure.

In Anime Psychic Detective Yakumo: Complete Collection is abut a girl with a number of possessed friends and a guy who can communicate with the dead. They team up to try to bring some peace, or at least control, to their school. Zombie-Loan: Complete Collection is about a girl who can see death coming, in the form of black rings around peoples necks. When she sees the rings on two of her classmates she warns them of their danger, but it turns out they have the rings because they kill zombies to pay off a loan. When they learn of her abilities, they try to use her to increase their profit margin.

We also get the continuation of a few favorites in the form of Bleach: Season 22 with episodes 304-316, and two from the Luffy franchise, One Piece: Season 6 Part 1 with episodes 337-348, and One Piece: Film Z, a feature length program. I should also mention that Steins;Gate: Complete Series is coming out in an Anime Classics version, which means you can pick up this twisty time travel tale fairly cheap.

Rumor has it that Patrick Warburton will be back in more live action episodes of The Tick, this time to be run on Amazon’s streaming video service. That is according to Topless Robot, who got it from People Magazine, and then it was confirmed by Comic Book Resources. Also back (courtesy of the interest he generated at the tail end of Guardians of the Galaxy) is Howard the Duck, in the form of the Howard the Duck Omnibus. Basically they compiled all 33 episodes of the Howard The Duck comic series, and every other story he was in from a range of Marvel properties. The blurbs Marvel shows after the credits have been running for a while being what they are, the first thing that came to my mind when I saw him was the Master of Quack Fu was going to be starring in a new Howard the Duck movie. I have found absolutely nothing indicating that is going to happen, but the thought does kind of make me smile.

I have been looking forward to The Boxtrolls for a while now, and it is finally time to see them on the big screen. Based on Alan Snow’s children’s novel Here Be Monsters, it is one of a series. I am hoping that the film does well enough at the box office that they decide to go ahead and make the rest of them. If you are looking for something a bit grittier, The Equalizer is also coming out this week. It stars Denzel Washington, and is based on the 1980’s TV show of the same name.

In movies we get The Signal, but the description just tells you about the setup, not the plot, and the trailer is just as vague. So the only thing I can really tell you about it is it includes Laurence Fishburne, and lot of reviewers thought it was a unique movie experience. From Australia, The Rover is the sequel to Animal Planet, and is another modern western done as a Mad Max wannabe. The one that sounds most amusing to me is Danger Dolls from Japan, about 4 assassins from one universe who need to impersonate 4 Pop Idols from another universe, so they can stop the evil cult that created the portal between their universes before both are taken over. Finally, if your in the mood for youthful rebellion and music without the genre aspects, the Swedish film We are the Best! is about 3 girls from Stockholm who form a punk band in the 1980s.

In TV, Defiance: Season Two continues the groundbreaking series which takes place as much in an MMORPG as it does on the small screen. Each episode has some references to things that happened that week in the game, as the various Alien races try to peacefully coexist in the wreckage of St. Louis. Why would I mention Reign: The Complete First Season, which appears to be a historical drama? Because it has Nostradamus handing out prophecies, which pushes it into the historical fantasy realm in my book. Plus it is on CW, which has really become a home for a lot of genre shows, and so deserves support.

In Anime, Attack on Titan: Part 2 continues the story of the defense of humanity from the giant killers (or perhaps killer giants would be more accurate) who’s only purpose seems to be to wipe us out. For those who found the ending of season 1, part 2 unsatisfying, fear not, because season 2 should hit the small screen in August of 2015. Ultimate Girl are three high school girls who morph to 20 times their normal size in order to battle giant monsters rampaging across Tokyo. But they can only sustain that size for 3 minutes, so they have to win their fights fast. Kampfer: Complete Collection can be a little confusing, what with the lady killer male protagonist being turned into a Kampfer, a lady who is supposed to enter mortal combat with other ladies and kill them. Since he is only female during the actual combat he rapidly becomes the center of a whole series of rumors, including the one where he is supposed to be dating himself. As lethal as the fighting is, he probably won’t live long enough to have to worry about the rumor mill.

While not genre, I should mention that K-ON!: Season 1 Complete Collection also comes out this week, for the moe music fans. Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt: Complete Series is coming out in an Anime Classics edition, which means if you shop around you can pick the whole thing up for around $25 or so. Finally, the groundbreaking Ghost in the Shell: 25th Anniversary Special Edition will be available in Blu-Ray this Tuesday. I should mention that if you have the Blu-ay version of GitS 2.0, it included a Blu-Ray version of the original 1995 masterpiece as well as the cleaned-up video with the extra 3D modeling 2.0 version, and I don’t see a lot of extras with the new one. I tend to lean to recommending you grab GitS 2.0 Blu-Ray for $11 over the new one, but be careful not to confuse it with GitS 2: Innocence, which was the sequel to the original film.

The Movie top pick this week is the 2014 reboot of Godzilla. It comes out on disc this week, but it actually came out as a digital download about a month ago. Digital download-to-own before the disc release rather than at the same time is something we are seeing more and more often these days, driven by more and more people watching on their personal devices rather than on a traditional TV.

Where we really make out this week is TV shows, because they want you to rewatch them before the next season starts and get all excited about it again. So this week we get Arrow: The Complete Second Season from the CW, Grimm: Season Three from NBC, and Sleepy Hollow: The Complete First Season from Fox. While it is not genre, it is fun, so I will also mention Castle: The Complete Sixth Season from ABC. In the interest of completeness, I ahould also mention From Dusk Till Dawn: Season One.

In Anime, Fairy Tail – Part 12 brings us episodes 132 through 142, and trust me when I say the wizard guild’s collateral damage track record is just as bad as ever. Meanwhile, in Majestic Prince: Collection 2, the Mecha combat is getting more dangerous with every round of fighting.
