A Fan-run con in Bloomington, MN is MarsCon; they have a goodly collection of guests and some interesting events, including Steampunk Bullwhip displays and Dragon Making by Committee.
CoastCon 33 in Biloxi, MS, is another Fan run con, this time with David Drake for the writer GoH and Nicky Clyne as the media GoH (the full guestlist is here).
StellarCon in High Point, NC is a general SciFi con. What I find interesting is it claims to be a smaller event, generally pulling around 500 attendees, and yet the guest list is large and includes some excellent authors.
Pikeville, AL will be hosting a Horror, Paranormal, and Cult film fest/con event called the Dark Woods Con. And RagnaroKon 10 is a Gamer con in Columbia MO.
There are two good general sci-Fi cons in the US this weekend; on the left coast is Condor XVII in San Diego, with Writer GoH CJ Cherryh. The theme is Tripping the Past Fantastic in all its Steampunk glory, with a Mad Science Faire and nominations open for the Mad Scientists Hall of Fame. Out of those already nominated, I have to vote for Nichola Tesla for the Real and for the Fictional, it’s a toss-up between Dr. Emmett Brown and Professor Albert Wickwire (in both cases because of the skill and sheer joy the actors brought to the parts). There are also writers workshops, dealers rooms, anime rooms, the Hogwarts Educational Retreat, lots of live music including the Steam Powered Giraffe, and ever so much more.
Over on the write coast, SheVaCon in Roanoke, VA, has guests covering the spectrum of authors (including Kevin J. and Rebeca M. Anderson), artists, and actors. All aspects of Fandom seem to be covered in the Events section, with Anime Rooms, TV/Movie Viewing Rooms, Game Rooms, Computer Rooms, Fan Groups (a LOT of them), multiple competitive Cosplay events as well as non-competitive, and everything else you would expect. Whichever coast you are on, quality general Sci-Fi Fun is to be had!
If you are down under, Continuum 6: Future Tense looks to be the venue of choice this weekend. The premise for the event is that 2010 was used in so many books, movies, etc. to mean simply The Future, that now that it is here we should celebrate! Their home page describes it as Killer robots are beating down the door while Mutant Hordes gather… your Emotional Inhibitor is on the fritz and your Computer is calling you “Dave”, and again this event has everything a good general Con should have, plus something special. This is the event where they hand out the Chronos Awards, which I find somewhat disturbing. I am not disturbed by the thought of the award, but by the fact that I know none of the nominees in a contest that is pulling together the best authors and stories from an entire subcontinent. Looks like I have some serious reading to do!
Meanwhile the Japanese Art Festival comes alive at the Richmond Adult Community College in Richmond, UK. This is a Non-traditional anime-related event, if you are interested in the subject matter, I urge you not to miss this one; it is a monster!

This one was even filmed in Akihabara! Strangely enough, this video was put together as part of a museum exhibit in London. For some reason the video seems to be blocked on the jstrider.net server, but it plays just fine on JStrider.Info, or you can watch it on YouTube if you are so inclined.
In the US, The Official Xena Convention (the 15th year) takes place this weekend over in LA, and while the guest lineup may not be as varied as the SFX Weekender, it does include many major players in the Xena world, including Lucy Lawless, Renee O’Connor, Hudson Leick, and Gina Torres. If you were ever a Xena fan, you don’t want to miss this one.
And there is a chance some of you might be able to find your way to BasauriCon in Basauri, Spain, which starts February 5th. It is primarily a Battlestar MediaCon, with Edward James Olmos & Mary McDonnell as the main guests.
In Canada, G-Anime takes place at the Palais des congrès in Ottawa. Besides all the usual Anime Con events, this gathering include a Competitive Cosplay Dance Workshop; be sure to bring your costume for any outfit-specific queries you might have.
From the 29th to the 31st, OhayoCon takes place in Columbus, Ohio. This Anime con has an amazing list of guests as well as panels, cosplay competitions, and an extensive AMV contest. On the left coast, Animation on Display is the San Fransisco Animation Convention, being held at the Hotel Kabuki on the 30th and 31st. With multiple musical acts, a cosplay portrait environment, and many industry guests, it looks like a fun gathering.
Somehow the ReaderCons and MediaCons have escaped me this week; if I find any, I will post them immediately.
Chattacon 35 takes place in the historic Chattanooga Choo-Choo Hotel in TN from the 22nd to the 24th. Guests at this ReaderCon include Sherrilyn Kenyon, Timothy Zahn, Jody Lynn Nye and Bill Fawcett.
COSine 2010 is a ReaderCon with GoH L.E.Modesitt Jr., happening from the 22nd to the 24th in Colorado Springs. Another fan-run gathering is ConFusion 2010; it runs from the 22nd to the 25th, and is the annual Science Fiction convention hosted by the Stilyagi Air Force of Ann Arbor.
The main MediaCon this weekend is the Salute to Star Trek in San Francisco from the 22nd to the 24th. Primary GoH’s are William Shatner and Patrick Stewart, but there will be a ton of others there as well.
Further ConFusion takes place in San Jose, CA, from the 21st to the 25th. Now in its 12th year, FurCon is one of the largest anthropomorphic (aka “furry”) conventions in North America.
On the 23rd through the 26th (they are running from Saturday through Tuesday because Tuesday is a national holiday), ArcanaCon XXVIII takes place in Melbourne, Australia. This is primarily a GamerCon, with the emphasis at the RPG end of the spectrum.
For Anime conventions, the SoDak Anime Convention happens from the 23rd to the 25th in Rapid City, South Dakota. Guests include Voice Actors Vic Mignogna and Wendy Powell, and something no anime con should be without: their own in-house roller derby team, the Rushmore Rollerz, who run under a theme song by Florence and the Machine, A Kiss With The Fist.
